CANSO asia pacific activities

CANSO APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR ASIA-PACIFIC

CANSO have announced that the new Director of Asia-Pacific affairs will be Mr Hai Eng Chiang, formerly a Deputy Director General and Director Air Traffic Services at CAAS. He will be tasked with the role of leading CANSO’s new Asia-Pacific Office, and working with ANSPs in the region to respond to the severe challenges facing ATM in the regions.

CANSO Secretary General Alexander ter Kuile said:

“We are extremely fortunate to have secured a man of Mr Chiang’s experience and stature to head up our Asia-Pacific work. We must record our gratitude in particular to CAAS who have exercised considerable leadership in the region by offering to host our new CANSO Office, as well as make the initial approach to Mr Chiang. We look forward to working with him and I am certain our Asia-Pacific members will swiftly see the benefits of the work of CANSO in the region.”

Mr Chiang said:

“As the global voice of ATM, CANSO provides ANSPs with the opportunity to work together to improve air navigation services across the world, as well as a unified voice on key issues such as safety and the environment. The establishment of a CANSO Asia-Pacific office is timely as the region is set to become the world's largest aviation market. Only strong regional co-operation and leadership will produce solutions to the capacity issues this growth will bring. I am impressed with CANSO’s commitment to tackling these issues, and with the foresight of the ANSPs who have supported the creation of the regional office. This is an exciting time for aviation and CANSO in the region, and I look forward to the challenges ahead.”

Asia Pacific Benchmarking work group

The Asia/Pacific Regional Benchmarking work group meets every year to progress ANSP cost efficiency benchmarking for participating Asia/Pacific and other CANSO Members.  The participants include representatives from Airways New Zealand, Aerothai, Airservices Australia, ATNS South Africa, and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). In addition airline participation from Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific Airways and the IATA Asia/Pacific office is welcomed.
Every meeting the group reviews the latest data set from the providers, clarifies definitions and undertakes annual reviews of newly implemented measures and their ongoing relevance. As a result some measures may be deleted on the basis that they are no longer considered of value. In addition new measures may be added each year.

In 2005 IATA commenced participation in the meetings, signaling their commitment to actively support the ANSP benchmarking activities in the Asia/Pacific region in the knowledge that in the long run a more efficient ANSP industry means a more cost-efficient aviation industry. With this in mind, IATA has accepted the challenge of working with the ANSP team to develop a core of key performance measures that IATA/the airlines see as important within this regional context. Once developed, these measures will be added to the list developed by the ANSPs and they may serve as input for global adoption.

The Working Group confirms its desire to continue the work, given the considerable added value it gives to the participating organisations.

All ANSPs are welcome to participate, for further information please contact:
