CANSO speeches at Third Aviation Environment Summit

25 April 2008

CANSO Secretary General Alexander ter Kuile made two speeches at the Third Aviation and Environment Summit, which was held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Geneva, on 22-23 April 2008.

In the opening session of the Summit, Alexander shared the platform with Giovanni Bisignani of IATA, Robert Aaronson of ACI, and Marion Blakey of ICCAIA. Alexander's speech was notable for its impassioned call for the industry to work together as 'one system' to create a vision for a sustainable aviation industry, which must then engage in the most direct and honest way possible with society, if it is to gain public permission to continue to expand.

The following day, at the beginning of Session 3, Alexander spoke as a replacement for Paul Barron of NATS, who was unable to attend the Summit. Alexander gave a review of the ACI-CANSO pre-Summit Workshop, which focused on the solutions to environmental challenges being developed by airports and ANSPs. He concluded by posing some questions to a panel of infrastructure and operations representatives, including David McMillan of Eurocontrol, Dan Elwell of the FAA, and Captain Mary McMillan of ALPA.
