About CANSO's Asia-Pacific Office

The Asia-Pacific is probably the world’s most diverse region in terms of types of ANSP, technical challenges, traffic management and capacity issues, and cultural and political differences. It is facing a fascinating challenge as traffic growth and economic pressure bring calls for greater ATM reform and cooperation. Many ANSPs in the region are world leaders, such as Airservices Australia, Airways New Zealand, CAAS Singapore, AEROTHAI and Airports Authority India. This region also encompasses India, the hosts of our 2007 AGM. In 2008 CANSO established an Asia-Pacific regional office, based at the Singapore Aviation Academy, which seeks to coordinate ANSP action in the region, and gives ANSPs a vital voice in projects such as the roll-out of ADS-B over the South China Sea.

Hai Eng Chiang, Director Asia-Pacific, joined CANSO in 2008 and leads the Asia Pacific Office on a 50% basis. Hai Eng has extensive experience in the field of ATM, most recently as the Deputy Director General and Director Air Traffic Services at CAAS.

As the Global Voice of ATM, CANSO has a vital role to play in disseminating the best practices of our industry.

The sudden and prolonged closure of European airspace brought about by the volcanic eruption in Iceland clearly demonstrates how critical civil aviation is to the world, and how an event from one part of the world can affect all of us. Indeed, no man is an island and like it or not we are all inter-connected.

Passengers have a choice of airlines and sometimes even airports, but they do not have a choice as to which ANSP to use when flying from point A to point B. Some do not even realise that their safety lies in the hands of several ANSPs along the flight path.
