Air Safety Transcends National Boundaries

Passengers have a choice of airlines and sometimes even airports, but they do not have a choice as to which ANSP to use when flying from point A to point B. Some do not even realise that their safety lies in the hands of several ANSPs along the flight path.
This is the reason why ANSPs have to work collectively to uplift the safety level of the entire community and why CANSO is working so hard to get ANSPs to adopt industry best practices. In today’s patchwork of Flight Information Regions, safety is only as strong as the weakest link in the flight path.

Yesterday I made this point when I spoke on the topic of Air Navigation and Safety at a Conference on Aircraft Accident Crisis Preparedness and Management at the Singapore Aviation Academy.

I took the opportunity to explain why CANSO has published its Standard of Excellence for Safety Management System and why it is conducting safety seminars in the region. The ICAO Global Aviation Safety Plan has called for the consistent adoption of industry best practices and the alignment of industry safety strategies and this is precisely what CANSO is doing.
CANSO will be having its 2nd Asia Pacific Safety Seminar next month on 24-25 April 2010 in Hua Hin, Thailand just prior to its annual regional ANSP Conference and all Asia Pacific ANSPs are invited to join us in a discussion on SMS implementation and how ANSPs can work together to continuously improve their safety performance.
