Aviation - Learning Lessons from the Unexpected

Aviation is a brave adventure for all who decide to play. But to lead this brave adventure can be even more daunting – and immensely challenging. Who could have predicted the events of the past week or so in Europe?
More the point, who would have wanted to? No-one ever wishes such events on our industry, but there are patterns of this happening every few years. While the ‘moment’ is often used to gather thoughts, analyse the situation, take a big breath and move forward, it often results in very critical analysis of measures taken to handle the situation.

The primacy of safety will always dictate ‘knee-jerk’ reactions in unusual circumstances. Would society demand anything less?

The cost of learning is often significant, which may be the case with this event. But the cost of not learning is even greater. To not understand the principles behind our reaction or apply what we have learned to other circumstances is unforgivable.

For ATM to maintain a sustainable environment for our customers, it demands that we learn to react better, with focus and confidence. This won’t happen without dedication and persistence. Only by asking questions and challenging paradigms can we gain confidence in why we follow a certain strategy or adopt certain methodology.

Quite a challenge for all involved.
