The environmental impact of aviation has always been a key issue for ATM. In the past, ANSPs devoted most of their attention to reducing the noise and local emissions around airports, as this reflected the priorities of society. In recent years however, climate change and CO2 emissions have joined noise as a vital issue. CANSO Members are working to increase airspace
efficiency, reduce aviation emissions and noise. The interactive diagram below lists examples of Projects undertaken by CANSO Members to achieve these aims. Projects are categorised by flight phase: On-Ground, Departure-Climb, Enroute Cruise, and Descent. Click on the flight phase areas to access more information, case studies, and initiatives.

The departure and climb phase of flight allows for a number of emissions reduction techniques, such as RNP procedures.
Enroute Cruise offers numerous opportunities for shortened or optimised routes, but significant obstacles remain.
The Approach is often where some of the most significant noise and emissions savings can be found.
