Austro Control Designs Performance Based Navigation Procedure for Greek Airport

Austrian ANSP Austro Control with its Instrument Flight Procedure (IFP) Team has successfully designed and flight tested a new RNP AR (Required Navigation Performance - Authorization Required) Approach to Runway 09 in Heraklion (LGIR) on the Greek Island of Crete. The high-end approach procedure is the first Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Procedure in the country. 

Austro Control was asked for help in designing and implementing the procedure due to their vast experience with this high-end type of approach in Austria’s terrain-challenged environment, with Innsbruck Airport being amongst the few airports worldwide that pioneered RNP as early as 2005. 

The Austrian support was requested by various airlines through IATA and a cooperation between the Hellenic CAA (HCAA), Austro Control, the German Aerospace Research Center DLR and the Swedish Charter Airline “Novair” was formed to design and validate the procedure. Following the design work by Austro Control the procedure was pre-validated in Novair simulators in Stockholm before being test-flown on an empty Airbus A321 in Heraklion. 

The flight validation was a full success, with HCAA members and flight crew praising the approach as a major step towards a new navigation environment that provides higher accessibility and efficiency for Heraklion airport, while at the same time being environmentally friendly and supporting flight safety by providing highly reproducible stabilised approaches to a runway end that up until now only featured a “VOR letdown” procedure. 

The official publication of the approach by HCAA is expected in 2014 and will pave the way for more PBN procedures to be published at various Greek airports.
