CANSO Academy: Exclusive CADENA training on ATFM contingency best practice

CANSO offered operations professionals worldwide with experience of air traffic flow management (ATFM) the unique opportunity to observe how to implement contingency best practice in the event of operational disruption.

The CANSO ATFM Data Exchange Network for the Americas (CADENA) held a contingency training on 23 September 2020, 16:30-17:15 CET. Members of the operations community worldwide are invited to join this as observers and learn first-hand how to apply operational best practice in challenging scenarios (for example, natural disasters or technology issues).

Showcasing regional expertise

CADENA is a CANSO initiative that promotes and facilitates the safe and efficient movement of air traffic in the Latin America and Caribbean region through effective implementation of air traffic flow management (ATFM) and collaborative decision-making (CDM).

CADENA has developed processes and procedures for data sharing and common situational awareness to enable the safe, efficient, and harmonised flow of air traffic. CADENA has also created measures to manage irregular operations caused by disruptive events, such as hurricane or technology error, and maintain safe, seamless skies.

CANSO made this contingency best practice available to all members via an exclusive CANSO Academy skill-sharing initiative, enabling aviation professionals from across the globe to join this regional training and observe ATFM contingency procedures in action.

Best practice training

The CADENA Contingency Event Training outlined the steps needed to handle difficult situations such as ACC, surveillance, or air to ground communication outage for example. This included the mechanism for smooth, timely decision making, and coordination, communication, and collaboration.

What was on offer:

CADENA participants (ANSPs and airlines) demonstrated how to coordinate, communicate and collaborate during simulation of a challenging scenario.

CADENA participants and observers were able to discuss the approaches used and how these could be refined or tailored to suit different scenarios or regions.

Observers expanded their ATFM/CDM knowledge and skills, and contributed to the development of global best practice and implementation worldwide.

CANSO members can access presentation slides and recordings in our member area, myCANSO.
