CANSO Honours President of the ICAO Council, Roberto Kobeh González

25 November 2013

The air transport community came together on 22nd November to honour the outgoing President of the ICAO Council for his tremendous contribution to the sustainable development of the international aviation industry. Roberto Kobeh González is retiring after seven years as President, following a long and distinguished career in civil aviation.

Jeff Poole, Director General CANSO, said, “At ICAO, Roberto faced many challenges in international civil aviation with diplomacy, patience as well as firmness, drive, charm and enthusiasm. He successfully built consensus on issues that would have defeated most people, such as on aviation and the environment and on improvements in aviation safety. Roberto brought to the role, not only his broad knowledge of the aviation industry, but also his expertise and experience in air traffic management (ATM) through his 20 years as Director General of Mexico’s ANSP, now called SENEAM.”

Mr. Kobeh’s departure was marked by a special luncheon in his honour in Montreal, jointly hosted by the three Director Generals of ACI, CANSO and IATA. The lunch was attended by over 80 guests including the President-elect, Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, the previous President, Dr. Assad Kotaite, Council Members, former Council Members, the Air Navigation Commission, senior ICAO staff and representatives of the air transport industry.

Poole continued, “Roberto has been an enthusiastic supporter of CANSO’s development as a young industry trade association. He called on CANSO to exercise leadership in helping and guiding our Members to deliver safety, capacity and efficiency improvements, a challenge to which we have risen. He has supported the CANSO vision of an interoperable, seamless and global ATM system for the 21st century. And he has been a key ally in promoting ATM as a vital and inherent part of the aviation value chain. He has shown his personal commitment to CANSO and its aims by encouraging ANSPs to join CANSO and by speaking at numerous CANSO and CANSO-supported events.”

During Mr. Kobeh’s time as President of the Council, CANSO was granted official Observer status at ICAO and to its Air Navigation Commission. Since that time CANSO has increased its standing and its contribution to ICAO. CANSO has driven the development of best practices on a range of subjects and contributed to the formulation of policy that supports a more efficient air navigation system and the sustainable development of aviation.

Poole concluded, “Roberto’s contribution has been immeasurable and we wish him the very best in his retirement. The senior level attendance at this special luncheon reflects the high regard in which he is held.”
