ERATO: A New, Innovative MTCD Concept and Tool is Soon to Be in Service in France and Italy

5 March 2014

Maurice Georges, DSNA CEO, and Massimo Garbini, ENAV CEO, have signed an agreement today to develop and deploy ERATO in France and Italy in 2015. This modern, Mid-Term Conflict Detection (MTCD) tool for air traffic controllers was designed by DSNA. It integrates innovative functions that provide helpful assistance to conflict resolution in an electronic environment.

Live trials in France and real-time simulations in Italy have demonstrated the numerous benefits inherent in ERATO: With new control tools, it enhances ATM systems and contributes to improving both safety and capacity.

ERATO is much more than simply a MTCD tool! Developed by France, Italy and Switzerland, ERATO works with Coflight, the new Flight Data Processing System, which is ready for i4D. Many foreign delegations visited the DSNA stand where they saw how French and Italian ATCOs handled air traffic with this new advanced ATC tool.

“The feedback coming from Italian air traffic controllers following real-time simulations has been very positive” Massimo Garbini said. “I am confident that this new system, developed in conjunction with DSNA will quickly contribute to improving ATM performance in both of our countries”.

“ERATO is designed to assist controller decision-making, enabling controllers to work in a safer and more efficient way” Maurice Georges explained. “I am pleased with this agreement, which strengthens our ties with ENAV in developing of our future ATM system”.

700 ATCOs starting in Brest, Bordeaux and Brindisi and continuing in other ACCs will be using ERATO in 2015. Then, ERATO will gradually be integrated into DSNA and ENAV’s new generation, innovative ATM system - the 4-Flight program.
