Excellence in safety starts here: The latest CANSO Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems

23 July 2018

Steve McMahon, Chair of the Safety Standing Committee (SSC) and FAA Deputy Vice President of Safety and Technical Training provides a member perspective on CANSO’s Safety Programme

One of the best things about being a CANSO Member is learning from the collective knowledge and best practices of all CANSO members, as well as sharing your own best practices so that others may also learn. It is one of the reasons I enjoy the annual CANSO Global ATM Safety Conference so much. We spend a full week together sharing the latest in aviation safety management best practice and learning innovative ways to make the global aviation system even safer.

But sharing and learning is best done when we all start from the same place – a common perspective on safety. This is why the CANSO Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems is so important to the ATM community. Using this tool, I know for example that the FAA’s safety management system is compatible with and even exceeds current international regulatory requirements. It also means that when sharing best practices, we are all speaking the same safety language.

An updated version of the CANSO Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems (SoE in SMS) is now available, which reflects the clear, plain language in the 2018 EUROCONTROL / CANSO Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems Maturity Measurement questionnaire. This update incorporates the latest developments in safety management thinking and practice in accordance with ICAO’s Annex on Safety Management (Annex 19), and recognizes that achieving the highest level of SMS maturity is a long-term process.

I encourage you to download the updated publication and use it as a reference in building, implementing and improving your organisation’s SMS.

The SoE in SMS and the annual questionnaire linked to it recognize that we must constantly be on the lookout for new best practices in safety, further deepening our collective knowledge and safety performance.

With improvements in safety performance in mind, I would like to remind everyone that we give out a CANSO Global Safety Achievement Award every year at the CANSO Global ATM Safety Conference. It is given to a company or team that has made a significant safety contribution which has reduced aviation risk in the previous 12 months. If your organisation has had a recent accomplishment in safety which you think should be recognised within the ATM community, please submit an application (available here). We will take applications through to 1 September.

Improving safety performance is best accomplished when leveraging the best practices and shared expertise of the global safety community. Not only are we better together, we are safer together.
