LATAMCAR Quarterly Update

Quarter 1, 2019

In November 2018, CANSO and Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA) organised a first of its kind Advance Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) Practical and Simulation scenario workshop in Kingston, Jamaica. The training brought together adjacent FIRs to explore practical and technical ATFM application and solutions to advance ATFM in the region.

The CANSO Latin America and Caribbean Conference 2018 was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A record of over 150 delegates attended the Conference, at which discussion topics included investment in air navigation infrastructure, cybersecurity, human factors, future of air navigation, and runway safety. In addition two workshops were held on remote and digital towers and a runway safety workshop.

CANSO presented at the ICAO Air Transport Meeting held in Georgetown, Guyana. CANSO encouraged all organisations to work together and communicate the importance of air transport to senior officials. CANSO also highlighted the efforts that ANSPs in the region are making in investing in modernising their air navigation infrastructure, including by CANSO Members COCESNA, EANA, IDAC, JCAA, Trinidad and Tobago Civil Aviation Authority, and emphasised the importance of separating service provision by the ANSP from the regulator.

In December, CANSO participated at the ICAO NAM/CAR and SAM workshop on cyber security in aviation where CANSO briefed on the risk associated with cyber security and shared with the audience a simulation of a cyber attack within an ANSP.

CANSO, IDAC and ICAO organised the first joint meeting between the NAM/CAR Air Navigation Implementation Working Group (ANI/WG) ATFM Implementation Task Force (ATFM/TF) and the CADENA Regional Implementation Group. Regional ATFM/CDM training, contingency planning, metrics, key performance indicators, ATFM tools were discussed. This is seen as a key step forward in integrating ATFM across the region.
