Strategy and Integration Quarterly Update

Quarter 3, 2018

Following the approval of CANSO: Fit for the Future of ATM at the CANSO Global ATM Summit and 22nd AGM in Bangkok, the Strategy and Integration Standing Committee (SISC) is making preparations to bring the new strategic direction into reality. The SISC (through Task Forces) will provide inputs on four of the new focus areas: Advocacy, Technology, Relevance and Presence, and conclude a draft work plan by mid October 2018. This will be reviewed by the Executive Committee in January 2019, with the aim to report back to Members at next year’s AGM.

The Global Benchmarking Workgroup (GBWG) has put out a call to all CANSO ANSP Members to participate in the Global Air Navigation Services Performance Report 2018. The Report is a global benchmarking exercise that CANSO Members undertake annually. Together, participating ANSPs share data relating to their organisation’s productivity and cost-efficiency and benchmark these against their peers. The result is that participating CANSO Members can measure and analyse ANS performance on a global scale, identify and track key trends in the market, and secure the intelligence they need to improve performance. If your organisation is interested in taking part, please get in touch.

Following the publication of the first edition of the CANSO Acquisition Excellence Manual, the CANSO Acquisition Excellence Workgroup (AE WG) has a new Chair, Kelly Ann Hicks, Assistant Vice President, Contracting, Logistics & Fleet, NAV CANADA, who will further develop work in this area.

Quarter 2, 2018

The Steering Committee of the Strategy and Integration Standing Committee (SISC) reviewed the draft CANSO strategic direction document, CANSO: Fit for the Future of ATM, including feedback provided at the CANSO CEO Strategy Summit 2018 in Madrid in March. A final version will be presented for approval by Members at the 22nd Annual General Meeting in Bangkok in June.

To accompany the publication of the CANSO Acquisition Excellence Manual in March, the Acquisition Excellence Workgroup members held a presentation session at World ATM Congress on buying and selling in a changing ATM landscape. See the Publications section for more information.

The Performance Based Regulation on Remote Towers Task Force (PBR on RT TF) is now gaining momentum, with revised Terms of Reference approved by the SISC Steering Committee. The ToRs include a focus on the digitisation of tower operations. A strong team of Member representatives is fully engaged in developing the scope of the workgroup and welcomes further participation.

The Global Benchmarking Workgroup (GBWG) is working on the Global Air Navigation Services Performance Report 2018. This report helps air navigation service provider (ANSP) Members measure their performance and benchmark it against their peers, enabling them and their stakeholders to better understand ANSP operations in terms of cost-efficiency and productivity. Together with Helios, the workgroup is looking at possible options to evolve the Global Air Navigation Services Performance Report and increase the volume of data analysed, including accessing more data from Europe Members. Submissions for this year's report are now open, with the first submission deadline being 3 August. If you would like to find out more about the report, and the benefits of participating, please contact info@canso.org.

Quarter 1, 2018

The inaugural meeting of the CANSO Strategy and Integration Standing Committee (SISC) meeting in November was well attended by both Associate and Full Members. Carey Fagan, Executive Director for International Affairs, FAA, was elected as Chair and Patricia Bier, Senior Advisor International Affairs, LVNL, as Vice Chair.

In terms of workgroup progress, the Acquisition Excellence Workgroup (AEWG) is on track to publish a guidance manual; the Performance Based Regulation on Remote Towers Task Force (PBR on RT TF) is gaining momentum with a widened scope to include digitisation of towers alongside remote towers; the Global Benchmarking Workgroup (GBWG) is looking for additional metrics and added value for all CANSO Members; and the ATM Security Workgroup (ASWG) is to consider new areas of focus and greater Member participation.

Work on the new strategic direction for CANSO has continued to progress well with the Strategy Task Force meeting for a two day workshop in December to focus on the future for CANSO and to contribute to the proposals for discussion at the forthcoming CANSO CEO Strategy Summit 2018 in Madrid in March.
