Remarks of CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, at the High Level Aviation Conference at the European Parliament on 23 February 2016

3 March 2016

In his remarks to Members of the European Parliament and Commission officials at the CANSO conference at the European Parliament “Boosting EU aviation through modernising air traffic management” on 23 February, CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, explained how air traffic management provides the connectivity that drives economic and social development and provides access to markets. Partnership with airlines, airports, manufacturers and social partners is vital to enhance safety and improve the efficiency of airspace. States must also play their part by fully supporting ATM with investments in infrastructure; working with other States to harmonise airspace; and allowing air navigation service providers to operate like normal businesses. He outlined three important developments that give the ATM industry the opportunity to lead change to enable aviation development: technological advances; the commitment of States to implement system upgrades; and a greater willingness to cooperate across States’ boundaries to harmonise airspace.
