Introductory remarks of CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, to SESAR Showcase, 15 June 2016

15 June 2016

In his remarks to the SESAR Showcase, CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, said that CANSO has supported SESAR from the outset as one of the primary means to achieve its vision of transforming global ATM performance. He said SESAR is a successful model that serves as an example for achieving the vision in other regions. But there is much more to do in deployment and in SESAR 2020, as well as to keep pushing along the rest of the world.

In his remarks, Poole addressed four key questions: why does ATM modernisation matter for ANSPs and aviation; how is ATM modernisation addressed around the world; is SESAR delivering value and why; and with the perception that change in ATM is too slow, how does SESAR improve the situation and how can we further accelerate?

Poole said that doing things as we have always done them in ATM is no longer an option. ANSPs have to anticipate the changing face of aviation and play an active part in shaping its future. Modernising ATM is the key to match the capacity demand for each category of airspace user. Technology is already changing the way that airspace is managed, helping us provide better services. It is also enabling us to harmonise systems, processes and traffic flows in a global way without reference to national borders or even land based equipment.

Poole concluded by saying that SESAR is a catalyst for modernising airspace and CANSO looks forward to continuing to work in partnership with SESAR Joint Undertaking on SESAR 2020 to further modernise airspace and achieve the CANSO vision of safe, seamless, efficient and harmonised airspace.
