LATAMCAR Quarterly Update

Quarter 1, 2018

In November, CANSO participated in the ALTA Airlines Leaders Forum. The Forum covered the growth opportunities and challenges for airlines and infrastructure in the region, in particular how enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of air navigation services would help facilitate growth. CANSO and ALTA, together with other industry partners, agreed to work on addressing this, exemplifying the strong partnerships CANSO is building in the region.

During December, CANSO organised the successful CANSO Latin America and Caribbean Conference 2017, hosted by DECEA in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, where more than 90 delegates from 35 organisations participated. This year´s conference followed a new format and involved a varied mix of CANSO Full and Associate Members in panels. Areas of discussion were the ICAO Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBUs), data exchange and air traffic flow management (ATFM) implementation, the CANSO SEANS-Safety initiative and automation. Following this, COCESNA (for Guatemala and Honduras) and EANA agreed to participate in SEANS-Safety evaluations and regional Members have continued to increase ATFM communications.

Within the CADENA framework, CANSO organised and coordinated collaborative decision-making (CDM) between American Airlines, COCESNA, COPA Airlines, ECNA (Cuba), IATA, ICAO NACC office, Miami (FAA) and Panama CAA. The purpose of the CDM coordination was to reduce delays caused by new operational restrictions imposed by the Jamaica CAA (JCAA) in the Kingston FIR. The JCAA Traffic Management Measures (TMM) mitigation strategy teleconferences resulted in positive outcomes for users during the busy holiday season by easing air traffic flow.
