Regional and Global Safety Discussions in Dublin

1 August 2014

It has been another busy month in Safety. One focus was the important task of collecting safety data from Members that will be used to evaluate safety performance across the industry in a number of different areas. Thanks to those Members that have already submitted their 2013 safety performance data for the CANSO Safety Performance Benchmarking Report. Your inputs are important and valuable to us and will inform future work and support the Safety Standing Committee’s decision making. For those that have not yet submitted, the deadline is 4 August so there is still time for your inputs please.

We also launched the 2014 edition of the EUROCONTROL/CANSO SMS Standard of Excellence (SoE) Measurement. This measurement provides vital information to collectively maintain and improve the Safety Management Systems (SMS) of participating ANSPs. If you have not submitted your survey, please do so without delay to ensure that the data continues to be robust. If you have any questions, please contact myself or Radu Cioponea at

The CANSO Global ATM Summit and AGM in Dublin provided me the opportunity to meet with many of our Members to talk about safety at the regional and global level. The main subjects that Members wanted to discuss with me were: support for the runway safety seminar following the CANSO Africa Conference in October; how best to get the support of Members for the various safety initiatives and workgroups; current status of SMS and how ANSPs can develop their capabilities; and the aims and objectives of the CANSO Global ATM Safety Conference in October.

Future safety events are as follows:

Middle East Safety Workgroup Meeting, 7 September 2014, Dubai, UAE
Africa Runway Safety Seminar, 9 – 10 October 2014, Livingstone, Zambia
2014 CANSO Global ATM Safety Conference, 26 – 30 October 2014, Dead Sea-Amman, Jordan Latin
American and Caribbean Runway Safety Seminar, 3 December 2014, San Salvador, El Salvador
Asia Pacific Safety Workgroup Meeting, 9 – 10 December 2014, Melbourne, Australia

The workshops and seminars that the SSC conducts around the world continue to promote safety globally. Participants leave empowered and ready to implement enhancements within their own organisations. Please visit the CANSO Events page for further information.
