Remarks of CANSO Deputy Director General, Simon Hocquard, to CANSO Africa Conference 2018

4 September 2018

In his remarks at the CANSO Africa Conference 2018, CANSO Deputy Director General, Simon Hocquard, explored the solutions for effectively tackling a high-growth aviation market and building a strong ATM industry for the future. In the context of rising passenger demand and the launch of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) earlier this year, Hocquard noted there are new challenges and expectations for air navigation service providers in Africa but also opportunities for CANSO members.

First, the ATM industry must work together to advocate for ATM and create strong industry partnerships. Whether that is commitments across the industry or between CANSO Members, solid partnerships allow the ATM community to be effective advocates and cooperative partners on both a strategic and practical level.

Second, robust partnerships can also provide an effective vehicle for delivering practical solutions, tools and technologies. As the CANSO Africa ATM Safety Peer Review Initiative or CDM initiatives illustrate, the more effective the partnership the more beneficial the operations or safety gains are.

Finally, Hocquard explained that finding common solutions to commons problems is at the essence of CANSO's commitment to strong partnerships and effective best practice implementation. Citing initiatives like CDM or ATFM, he explained how both help to bolster efficiency and effectiveness in the whole aviation value chain.
