Remarks of CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, to the CANSO Asia Pacific Conference in Queenstown, New Zealand on 4 May 2016

9 May 2016

In his remarks to the CANSO Asia Pacific Conference, CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, highlighted the success of the aviation industry in Asia Pacific which now represents over one third of global passenger traffic. This growth has had a positive impact on both employment and GDP growth; and improving connectivity by air has generated millions of jobs in the tourism industry.

Poole said that this growth needs to be well managed if we are to avoid capacity constraints and bottle necks. This means building efficient infrastructure for air traffic management (ATM). Vision 2020, CANSO’s strategic framework for the ATM industry, enables such growth through measures such as: air traffic flow management; working towards the common vision of a seamless sky; and collaborating on automatic dependent surveillance - broadcast (ADS-B).

Poole added that the industry needs to do a better job in persuading States of the economic benefits of aviation to support its calls for more investment in ATM infrastructure. He also stressed the importance of governments implementing the Aviation System Block Upgrades. Such investment will enable greater connectivity and the safe and efficient flow of air traffic.
