Remarks of CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, at the DFS Technology Conference in Langen, Germany on 15 November 2016

15 November 2016

In his speech at the DFS Technology Conference on UAS on 15 November 2016, CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, discussed how drone technology opens up new opportunities and applications but can also present some difficult challenges for the organisations that manage airspace.

Poole explained that we need to be able to satisfy the legitimate needs of all stakeholders: from pilots, airports and airlines who need assurance that they can fly safely; and from drone operators who want to develop their industry and transform the way we do things. He added that it is therefore the task of CANSO, along with its industry partners, to try and reconcile these complex, and sometimes competing, requirements.

In his speech, Poole describes how CANSO is working in partnership with ICAO, airlines, airports, and other stakeholders to create the necessary international drone standards, procedures and best practices; develop training programmes; educate drone users; and maintain a strategic framework for collaboration and knowledge-sharing. CANSO is at the forefront of the campaign to open the world’s skies to new users, while maintaining safe, efficient and harmonised global airspace.
