Remarks of CANSO Director General, Jeff Poole, to the SESAR Innovation Days in Salzburg on 3 December 2018

4 December 2018

In his remarks to the SESAR Innovation Days, Jeff Poole, CANSO Director General, talked about the important role that SESAR plays in R&D that helps develop new technologies for air traffic management. New technologies help air navigation service providers address the twin challenges of growing air traffic in Europe and new entrants to airspace such as drones and high altitude vehicles. Two developments in particular have the potential to boost R&D efforts considerably: digitisation will support faster and more affordable research, with more flexibility; and ATM systems will be increasingly automated, making greater use of big data and increasing the efficiency of research. While excellence in R&D and implementing new technologies will help solve some of the challenges in Europe aviation, there also needs to be political will to remove the present interoperability and institutional constraints to a true pan-European approach to airspace management. In the meantime CANSO is fully involved in SESAR and CANSO Members invested EUR 6.2 billion in Europe between 2011 and 2016 in new ATM infrastructure.
