Remarks of Jeff Poole at the CANSO Africa Conference

8 October 2013 - I want to start by expressing, on behalf of the entire CANSO team and membership, sincere condolences for the loss of life suffered last Thursday in the plane crash at Lagos Airport. I will speak later about the overall improvements in safety in the region but any loss of life or accident is a stark reminder of the responsibilities that all of us in the industry have for those people who travel by air. 

It is fitting that we hold this important conference on air traffic management in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. It is here where the Abuja Declaration on Aviation Safety in Africa was endorsed and signed in May 2012 by the African Union’s Ministerial Meeting on Aviation Safety and Security, to address the aviation safety challenges facing Africa, and to ensure seamless operation of aviation in Africa and with the other regions of the world.
